CHARLES HUNT ESQ. (1732 -1784)

Attorney at Law

Charles Hunt Esq was born on the 20th March 1732 at St Andrew, Holborn, England and he was baptised on the 20th April at St Andrew, Holborn  London England. His parents were living in Plow Yard, Fetter lane, Holborn, London at the time of his birth. He was the son of Captain John Hunt also referred to as John Hunt, gentleman (1709 - 1750) and Easter Salter (1710 - 1773). Captain John Hunt was the son of John Hunt (1685 - 1711) born in 1685 in St Botolph London and Elizabeth (unknown). His father John born in 1685 to John Hunt (1651 - 1702 to 1750) Citizen and Brewer of London died in Holborn London when John was 15 months. Captain John Hunt 1709 - 1750  and his father John Hunt 1685 - 1711 are still being researched.

Charles Hunt  studied to become an attorney and was entered into the Staple Inn on the 11th December 1756 with Richard Wishaw of Staple Inn as his surety. He was 24 years. On the 28th September 1764, aged 32 years, he married in St Andrew, Holborn Miss Henrietta North of Woodford Essex (London Evening Post September 27th)

He wrote his will on the 13th March 1778 in Enfield, Middlesex, London and resided in Enfield, Middlesex from 1780, and probably prior to this. He suddenly died at age 52 years on the 9th September 1784. He died in Rathbone Place, Percy Street, London near where he presumably kept his London residence and rooms in Percy Street. He dropped down dead as he was getting out of a postchaise. Probate was declared on the 10th September 1784 in London and Henrietta Hunt, his wife,  was sole executrix. He was buried in the North Aisle St Andrews, Enfield in the vault of his ancestor, John Greene (1627 - 1705) - Secretary of the New River and Elizabeth Greene nee Myddleton (1631- 1675) the daughter of Sir William Myddleton (1603 - 1652) and Eleanor Harris (1615 - 1649) and granddaughter of Sir Hugh Myddleton who brought the New River to London. Many thanks to the minister at St Andrews, Enfield for photographing this vault. previously there was a balcony in the North Aisle and he had to climb a very tall ladder to get the photographs.

Charles Hunt Esq and Henrietta North had the following children:

Charles North Hunt (1765 - 1811) See above

Henrietta Hunt (7771 - 1814) Henrietta was born on the 29th March 1771 and baptised at St Pancras Parish Church, Middlesex on the 1st August 1771. In 1809 she is mentioned in her stepfather's will (Dr Edward Ford of 4 Golden Square, Soho, Westminster) as a spinster. She died about 1814 in Bath, Somerset, England where she was living with her mother, Henrietta. Probate was sworn by Thomas Hunt Esq and her mother on the 18th November 1814.

Miles Hunt was born on the  17th July and baptised the same day at St Andrew, Enfield, Middlesex. He was buried at St Andrew, Enfield on the 1st August 1778.

George Hunt was baptised on the 3rd August 1779 at Saint Andrew, Enfield

Henrietta North (1740 - 1827)

Henrietta was born about 1740 in Woodford, Essex into a large family with 12 siblings and baptised on the 11th January 1740 at St Olave, Southwark, London, England. She was the daughter of Thomas North (1690 - 1747) of Woodford Essex an imminent and wealthy Brewer of Southwark, London, (Barnaby Street & Battle Bridge) and Lady Mary Cox (1699 - 1774).

Lady Mary Cox was the daughter of Sir Charles Cox (1660 - 1729) member of parliament for Southwark, London, England and Lady Martha Thomlinson (1673 - 1724) and a descendant of the Pleydells of Shrivenham, Berkshire, England.

After the death of Charles Hunt Esq, Henrietta married Dr Edward Ford (1747 - 1809) of 4 Golden Square on the 19th July at St James, Westminster, London, England. The marriage was reported in the Gentleman's magazine, Volume 58 .Dr Edward Ford been previously married to Sarah Frances Hansard daughter of Hugh Josiah Hansard who had died in 1783. 

 

Dr Ford's will was written on the 31st May 1809:

Surgeon of Golden Square, St James Westminster, Middlesex, London

Bequeaths:

Sister, Mary Watkins of Banwell, Somerset, widow - 300 pounds; Mary Ford (1753 - 18270 had married William Watkins, farmer of banwell, Somerset;

Nephew, Dr Thomas Copeland - 300 pounds;

Friend Dr John Adaire Saroyan, surgeon of Great Marlboro Street - 50 pounds;

William Clifton of Great Newport Street, Soho - executor - 100 pound;

Nephew William Copeland of Chigwell Essex, apothecary - 100 pounds;

Sister, Mrs Ann King an annuity - 25 pound; (sister)

Annuities, property and personal belongings to his wife Henrietta Ford nee Hunt nee North for natural life;

Annuity to Henrietta Hunt, daughter of Henrietta Ford via Charles Hunt; 

NB Rev William Copeland (1747 - 1787) married Sarah Ford - sister of Edward in 1771 n Byfield Northampton. They had a number of children. Edward Ford leaves his two nephews money and then further bequeaths after the death of Henrietta. 

Dr Thomas Copeland, nephew, took over Dr Edward Fords practice in Golden Square. He was born in 1781 in Byfield. His brother William Copeland was born in 1780 in Byfield Northampton. He also became a surgeon living in Chigwell, Essex. William's son 1804 - 1885 became a Minister 1849 living at Farnham, Essex.

Dr Edward Ford doesn't mention any children to his first wife in his will. 

Some references say Sir Richard Ford was his son.

Henrietta Ford wrote her will on the 12th December 1825 at Dunsford Place, Bath, Somerset, England. She died on the 11 March 1827 at Dunsford Place, Bath, Somerset, England. probate was sworn on the 10th may 1827 by William Clifton, surgeon of Leicester Square and Frances Swift wife of Jonathan Swift.
