The Story of Lieutenant Jonathan Warner and his family. Lieutenant Jonathan Warner arrived in Australia on the Orpheus in September of 1826 as part of the NSW Royal Veteran Corps. Accompanying him were his wife, Mary Warner nee Dunkley and four of their children – James, Augusta, Jonathan and William Warner. Lieutenant Warner served in his military capacity as Assistant Surveyor of Roads and Police Magistrate in the Wisemans Ferry District, then as Police Magistrate at Newcastle, and Police Magistrate of Brisbane Waters. He had served in the British Military since the age of fourteen. He secured a grant at Lake Macquarie and was one of the first settlers in this area. The site of his home “Biddaba” and the original land grant was named after him – Warners Bay. Jonathan and Mary Warner had ten children and their descendants number in the thousands. The family were settlers in a wild and uncivilised land where they carved successful lives for their children and their children’s children. This is the story of an Australian family primarily in colour, inclusive of genealogical details, primary anecdotal sources and historical research.

EXTRACT CHAPTER ONE

LIEUTENANT JONATHAN WARNER 1786 – 1843

Lieutenant Jonathan Warner (2) was born circa 1786 and christened on the 12th February, 1786 in the Parish Church of St Andrews, Church of England, Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire, England and died at Biddaba, Warners Bay, Lake Macquarie, NSW, Australia on the 15th October 1843 - “the same day that he signed his will in very shaky handwriting.” Probate on Jonathan Warner’s estate was granted on the 8th July 1844. Jonathan had married Mary Dunkley on the 18th August 1817 in Kimbolton, Huntingdon, England when he was about 31 years old. He was the son of Charles Warner (2) (1745 – 1794) and Sarah Mackeness/Mackness. Sarah Warner was buried at St Andrews Anglican Church, Kimbolton, Huntingdon aged 73 years on the 8th June 1821. This places her birth around 1748. At the time of her death Sarah Warner was living in Ashfield Cottage, Kimbolton. Charles had married Sarah Mackness/Mackeness in St Andrew’s Anglican Church Kimbolton, Huntingdon, England on the 26th December 1780. The witnesses were Thomas Eaton and George Ny – illegible. Charles and Sarah also gave birth to a daughter Anne in 1782, christened on the 2nd February 1783 at St Andrews, Kimbolton and Anne married George Brown in 1816, also in Kimbolton, Huntingdon.  Sarah Mackeness was Sarah Nicholson - a widow when she married Jonathan Warner and had prior children.. We have a record of a Sarah Nicholson married to a George Mackiness on the 13th February 1769/1770 in Kimbolton, Huntingdon. Sarah Mackeness was a widow when she married Charles Warner in 1780.
